How to Make a Butterfly Feeder (100 Days of Art Day 11)

To conclude our study of butterflies and moths, we made a butterfly feeder to hang in our yard! It was a pretty easy activity to do and looks really nice hanging from a tree.

 

The supplies you will need for your butterfly are:

an empty clear plastic 2-liter bottle

fake flowers

twine or yarn

hot glue gun

hole punch

cotton balls

thumb tack

 

For the food:

sugar

water

 

The first thing we did was cut the top of the bottle.

Next, we took a thumb tack and poked a hole in the bottom side of the bottle.

Then we took the plastic flowers off of the stems.

We poked one of the flower stems through the hole we made with the thumb tack. I hot glued the petals to the bottle to hold it on.

The kids took turns hot gluing the flowers around the bottom of the bottle.

 

 

Next I took a cotton ball and hot glued it to the center of the flower that I had poked through the hole. I also hot glued a cotton ball inside the bottle around the same hole.

 

 

We used a hole punch to make holes in the top of the bottle and threaded some twine through the holes so we could hang it up in a tree.

 

We mixed up about 1/8 cup of sugar with some water in the bottle for the butterfly food and hung it in a tree!

 

(Unfortunately it started raining so we haven't seen any butterflies at our feeder yet.)

 

The kids had fun making this butterfly feeder! Hopefully we will see some butterflies soon.

Weekly Recap: 1/20/20-1/24/20

This week, we "traveled" to Canada in geography. We did some mapping activities, labeling the provinces and territories among other things. We read fun facts and completed our country fact worksheet. 

The kids made a postcard from Canada.

We read in "Children Just Like Me" about an Inuit boy living in Canada and they filled out their "Children Just Like Me" worksheet. We also read "Very Last First Time" about an Inuit girl in Canada who "walked on the sea floor" for the first time.

We drew maple leaves and used geometric pattern to color them. We completed a flag worksheet, read tons about Canada in our atlases and books, and learned about many inventions that come from Canada or Canadians.

In science, we learned about amphibians and focused on frogs and toads this week. We made a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting frogs and toads. I found a few worksheets on SuperTeacherWorksheets.com that I printed out for them. They love puzzles!

In Bible Road Trip, we read Genesis 1-11 this week and completed our notebook pages. We memorized Genesis 1:27 and reviewed our memory verses from the past two weeks.



Titus learned about contractions this week. I found this activity on Pinterest and decided to see if it would help him - and it did! I used Mega Blocks and a dry-erase marker. I wrote the contractions on the double blocks and then the two words that make up the contraction on the single blocks. He had to match the single blocks to the double blocks. He really enjoyed this and it was so simple to pull together.

Eli had a few basketball games this week, and he played great at both of them. My mother-in-law came to our house and sat with the baby and younger kids so I could go to the home game without having to take Zeke!

Mercie shot her first deer this week! She killed a doe. Mikaela got a buck and Eli got a doe earlier in the season, and Mercie was anxious to get her first one. She was very excited.



Week in Review - 1/13/20 to 1/17/20

I haven't done a week-in-review post in so long! I hope I can remember how to do them, ha!

We "traveled" to North America in geography this week, beginning with Mexico. We learned some interesting facts about Mexico, did some mapping activities, colored the flag, and practiced some Spanish words. We also learned the colors in Spanish. The kids make a postcard for each country every week. We also made Atzec suns with air-dry clay, paper bag maracas, and drew sombreros using a YouTube tutorial. We ate tacos on Sunday after church. I planned to go out and eat Mexican food, but it didn't happen this week.

In science, we learned all about fish! The kids learned how fish breathe, the difference in bony fish and cartilaginous fish, and the different types of fins. They cut fins out of construction paper and glued them to a fish and drew and described the different fins.

 

We completed week two in Bible Road Trip, Year One, including three notebook pages. We memorized John 1:17 and reviewed 2 Timothy 3:16-17 from last week. We read Acts 25-26 and Luke 23-24.

 
Titus learned about fractions this week and played with our "Fraction Action" game. Mercie learned how to multiply and divide decimal numbers, and Silas reviewed multiplication and division facts.

We had our homeschool group's 4H meeting on Monday, and Mercie and Silas each gave a short presentation. Each officer takes one meeting to provide a guest speaker or do their own presentation. Mercie and Silas are both officers, so we had two meetings to supply! My mom came in November and spoke about her and my dad's mission trips to Nicaragua. (They are full-time missionaries.) This month, Mercie gave a presentation on the horseman of the Apocalypse and Silas gave one on the temptations of Jesus. They did a great job!

Wednesday we had TeamKID at our church. I'm the director and I also teach the Bible lesson each week. This week we talked about the importance of the Bible, and our memory verse was 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (which was our memory verse last week in Bible Road Trip).

I always love doing this week-in-review posts because it's so nice to see how much we actually do each week! We are finished with schoolwork by lunch almost every day, so it's easy to think we aren't doing "enough". These posts always remind me that we are doing plenty!

Week in Review: August 24-August 28, 2015

This week has just flown by! I am so amazed at how simple Heart of Dakota makes my job as a homeschool mom. Each week, I sound like a walking advertisement for HOD, but, seriously, it is THAT good.

Bigger Hearts for His Glory {unit 5}

In history this week, we read about Myles Standish and Squanto, the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and Chief Massasoit {not in that order}. We made Indian sand paintings.

We also made a "needs" and "wants" chart with magazine pictures. {You can probably guess which one was done by a girl and which one was done by a boy.}

We defined vocabulary words.

We added to our timeline, and mapped the Mayflower's journey {but I didn't get a picture}.

In science this week, we added vertebrates to our Animal Kingdom sheet. The kids love drawing the animals!

We also did an experiment about germs. We rubbed lotion on our hands, then I sprinkled plenty of glitter on them. The glitter represented germs. They had to try to wash the glitter off with a dry paper towel, cold water, and then warm, soapy water. The warm, soapy water is the only thing that got all the glitter off their hands. They really understand now why it is so important to wash your hands with warm, soapy water!

Our poem this week was titled "Each In His Own Tongue", and the kids illustrated it.

We are learning the song "O For a Thousand Tongues", and it is just beautiful. The kids enjoy singing each day.

Our verse this week was Proverbs 18:10, 'The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The godly run to it and are safe.' We talked about responsibility and how to be responsible to God.

In math, Mercie learned how to add with carrying. She caught on pretty fast.

 She continued learning how to write proper sentences in grammar, and aced her spelling test again.

Eli is reviewing fractions in math, and diagramming compound subjects, predicates, and sentences.

In his science this week, he learned about the muscular system. He had to color the different muscles in the body, do a few activities showing how to strengthen muscles, and draw the anatomy of the foot.

They both also had Bible study, and Mercie continued with her handwriting. I let her pick any page in the book to do each day, as long as the whole workbook gets done.

And that about wraps up our week in Bigger Hearts!

Little Hearts for His Glory {unit 5}

Silas learned about Moses this week. We had a fun Rhyme in Motion, and I'm glad he enjoys doing them {because they are fun for me, too!}. 

 He made a paper airplane quail, and we had fun flying it and trying to "catch" it like the Israelites did in the wilderness.

We made an edible "calf" like the one the Israelites did when Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments from God. He got to eat it, like Moses made the people do with the calf.

In science, he learned about clouds {correlating with God leading the people by a cloud}. We made a cotton ball cloud "rain", and then we glued three types of clouds {cotton balls} to a worksheet.

We only complete two lessons in Reading Made Easy {although we did it every day!} He is stuck on a few sounds, but he can sound out several words with the -ap ending. We played Bingo with chocolate chips and his word cards.

He is still working on handwriting, and is having trouble forming letters and numbers correctly. He traced his memory verse worksheet, and I am still pleasantly surprised at how quickly he remembers his verse each week.

We continued reading in Reddy Fox, and he had to draw a picture of his house. He wasn't sure if he wanted to draw our "real" house {in Louisiana} or this rental house {in Ohio}. I'm not sure what the final product was...

He made a number chart with dot stickers in math, and is excellent and counting objects to 10 and recognizing the number. We are working on writing the numbers...

I am proud of my little man for being such a cooperative kindergartener! He is retaining so much, and I am enjoying every moment.

Little Hands to Heaven {unit 4...sort of}

My three year old decided to cut school this week, and he did two days worth. He put dot stickers on a "D", and did our Finger Play. He also glued 4 women on the number 4 worksheet. We are going to do the rest next week.

So that was our week in review! I'll write my 7th grader's week in review tomorrow.
