I'm always trying to get my younger boys to write neatly, so I readily agreed to review the
Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting e-book from
Everyday Education, LLC. Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting teaches the italic-style of handwriting. This 216-page e-book is more than just handwriting, though - it also includes reading instruction.
There are 60 lessons in
Perfect Reading, Beautiful Handwriting. The first chapter discusses the author's way of teaching reading and handwriting, and the second chapter contains the guide to writing the alphabet in this style of handwriting. Chapter three starts with short vowel sounds and progresses to blends and compound words. Chapter four teaches long vowel sounds and combinations, and chapter five contains words with silent letters, more blends and endings, numbers, and most common words. Chapter six is more handwriting practice, including teaching calligraphy and writing with an edged pen.
Each lesson begins with a word list for your child to read. As the lessons progress, so does the word list as it adds in "silly sentences" for your child to read. The handwriting lesson includes mainly words from the word list and review words. Each handwriting sheet has the words to trace and copy right above a blank line, so your child can copy directly from above. This is much easier for a child to do than to look back and forth from a separate page.
This book is targeted to:
- teaching four and five year old children to read and write
- older children who are having difficulty with reading and/or writing
- a child that can read well, but needs handwriting improvement
- an adult that wants to improve his or her handwriting
My 7 and 9 year old boys are both great readers, but their handwriting leaves much to be desired. I printed out the alphabet pages for them to do first. They each did about one page a day, and I didn't notice much improvement. I then printed out some of the pages from chapter three, including the word lists for my 7 year old to read. He read the word list perfectly and proceeded to write in his normal handwriting. No matter how I tried to teach him to write like the book was teaching, he could not do it. My 9 year old was some better about copying the handwriting style, but it didn't come natural to either one of them. I did like the way the handwriting lesson pages were designed. They were neat, attractive, and not too busy. There were some black and white illustrations, but nothing distracting. I think this would work best for a child with little to no handwriting instruction.
