Homeschool Highlights (3/30/20-4/3/20)

This week we traveled to South Africa in our Expedition Earth curriculum. Our libraries are now closed, so we didn't have any library books to read. We read from "Another Trip Around the World" and from our atlases. We completed our country fact sheet, flag sheet, Children Just Like Me worksheet, our postcards, and a fun South African newspaper worksheet.

We made yarn spiral wall hangings. We were supposed to use burlap, but we didn't have any and aren't making many trips to town so we used colored cardstock. They turned out really cute!

We also made these sunset silhouette paintings.

In science we resumed our study in God's Design for Life and picked up on arachnids. We talked about the differences in insects and arachnids, making a Venn diagram. We had a cut and glue insect and arachnid sorting worksheet. We also labeled the parts of a spider. Then I put some beans inside of a balloon to represent eggs in a spider egg sac. The kids had to guess how many "eggs" were in the "egg sac". There were 89! A spider's egg sac can contain 50-100 spiders. We read from "The Bug Book" since we couldn't get any library books.

We are still reading in Exodus. The kids drew the priest's breastplate with the gem stones and tribe names in order. They also drew stone tablets and wrote the Ten Commandments on them. We are trying to memorize the commandments in order. We worked on memorizing 1 Corinthians 13 and have memorized 4 verses.

The kids are getting closer and closer to being finished with their language arts and math books! Everything is winding down and reviewing concepts, so it's not taking long at all to complete. I'm trying to decide if we are going to continue through the summer, since we'll probably still be staying home due to the coronavirus.
Mikaela and Eli have worked on Khan Academy this week, read through some of their school textbooks and read some literature books we had on our shelf.

We played lots of Uno and Yahtzee. We went outside every day for hours, walking around the yard, playing basketball and football, jumping on the trampoline, and checking the cows. We've cooked so much more, but I did break down Wednesday night and ordered pizza. We ran to town to pick it up and picked up Sonic drinks. I had coupons for 99 cent large drinks, so we all got a large. That was a nice treat! It was also fun to change the pace a bit and do something different.
Zeke loves to walk on the trampoline.
