BFIAR: Prayer for a Child & Link-Up

{Silas is 5 and 1/2, and Titus is 3 and 1/2 - those 1/2s are important!}

This week, we "rowed" the book Prayer for a Child by Rachel Field. It is such a sweet book and prayer, that my boys and I loved reading it each day!

Monday, we talked about bread and milk and where they come from, and we made this simple page:

We also made some yeast rolls! It was fun to involve the boys in cooking because I don't do it nearly enough. Silas cracked the egg, added the butter, water and yeast and mixed it up! He didn't like kneading the dough because it was a little sticky, but Titus didn't mind getting his hands messy! The rolls turned out delicious, and we had a snack of hot rolls and cold milk {just like the girl in the book}.

On Tuesday, we concentrated on prayer. We read the Lord's Prayer in their storybook Bible and talked about how to pray. Then we made these prayer bracelets {idea from here}! Each color bead reminds us of one aspect of prayer.

On Wednesday, we talked about all the different children in the world. We read the book, "Children Around the World" and made a collage from magazine pictures of children.

On Thursday, we talked about the night sky and stars. We made a window like the one in the book with star stickers in the sky.

On Friday, we read the book again, and I let the boys "help" me read. I would leave off the last word of each line, and they would fill it in. Then we talked about prayer again and did this fun demonstration on prayer:

I used food coloring to make the water red. I added two Alka-Seltzer tablets to the water, and the kids watched the water fizz! I told them that is how God feels when we pray to Him - excited. Next, we got really quiet and listed to the fizz. I told the kids that we must be very quiet sometimes and listen for God's voice. And lastly, we talked about how when we ask for forgiveness, our sins are like the Alka-Seltzer tablets - they dissolve into nothing and can never be brought back against us again. They really enjoyed it, and it always amazes me how something so simple can be so exciting and bring so many truths to their level of understanding. {idea here}

In All About Reading, Silas learned the lowercase "i", "j", "k", and "l". We also played some games that helped him recognize beginning sounds, and he did great!

We worked on  addition and number bonds in math.

Silas also worked in his handwriting workbook and his Count and Color for Boys workbook. He started speech therapy this week with a private tutor. She is so sweet and gave me such reassurance that he will improve! We had a fun week, and I am already looking forward to next week!

Here is the featured post from last week. Check it out for some great ideas to use with "Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?".
