Week in Review: Week Five of Homeschool

Week five - check!

We have actually made two small changes so far this year. First, we cut out Language Smarts! While I love the workbook, and it worked great for Titus, it's just too redundant for Zeke this year. He is using Abeka Grammar and doing well with it, so we are just down to one grammar curriculum (which is how it should be at this age!).

Next, we finished the Literature Kit for "Charlotte's Web," but when we started using the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" kit, I decided it was not 'fun' enough for Zeke. The questions were hard to answer and the vocabulary was just too much. I found a literature study for the book on Teachers Pay Teachers for $8, and already it's so much better! He gets to do some coloring, designed his own Golden Ticket, and can answer all of the questions with ease.

Other than that, everything else is going great.

We learned about the rainforest biome this week in preparation for our South America study, where we will visit Brazil and Bolivia over the next two weeks.

In science, he learned about animals, including what makes a carnivore, herbivore, and omnivore and predators and prey. He thought it was funny when I told him that I learned to memorize what the difference between predator and prey were by saying, "The prey PRAYS not to get eaten."

He's scooting along in math, learning multiplication and reviewing past concepts. He loves the games in Math with Confidence, and I do, too, because they're so easy to set up, quick to play, and very effective.

He keeps his pencil sharpener right by him and keeps his pencil super sharp!

We are still loving Bible Study Guide for All Ages, and I posted my full review on it a few days ago.

Zoey learned the letter "Ee" this week. She also reviewed her shapes and colors. We read "Strictly No Elephants" and "But No Elephants," and she made a paper plate elephant.

Preschool is going well, but sometimes Zoey wishes she had "more" work. I do miss doing Five in a Row and similar literature studies, so I'm considering adding that to her day. We actually have been skipping the science section of her curriculum because it's just too much for her right now. So I guess I should add in some science through books?

We made our weekly library visit where Zeke got a stack of books that he's already started plowing through!

Friday night was Friday Night Football. Silas is a sophomore and starts on the varsity team as a left guard. We won 28-0 and Silas had a great game! I love football season; it's so much fun when you get to watch your kids play.

How was your week?

Week in Review: Week Four of Homeschool

We have successfully completed four weeks of homeschool for this school year! It's really flown by, and I hope it will slow down some so I can really enjoy it.

Zeke, grade 3

AROUND THE WORLD GEOGRAPHY

We visited Canada this week in geography! Zeke learned about inukshuks, drew one, and built one with Legos.

He completed all of his worksheets:

We ate pancakes and syrup for breakfast (it wasn't maple syrup, but that's okay!).

EXPLORING GOD'S WORLD WITH THIRD GRADE SCIENCE

We are enjoying this science from Schoolhouse Teachers! This week, Zeke read all about plants, photosynthesis, and habitats. Zeke reads the daily lessons aloud and completes any activities. Some are hands-on while others are written or oral. It's painless and he is really retaining a lot of information!

MATH WITH CONFIDENCE

He completed Unit 2 this week, where he learned multiplication by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's.

GRAMMAR

In Abeka grammar, he has continued working on sentences and structure as well as commas.

LITERATURE KITS

He finished reading "Charlotte's Web" this week! He is moving on to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." We liked the Literature Kit workbook, but I wish there was more hands-on activities, so we may do something different after this one. There are a lot of vocabulary words and comprehension questions, and it gets a bit tiresome for him.

BIBLE STUDY GUIDE

We are still loving this Bible curriculum! Zeke has memory work and lots of reviewing previous lessons, so there is lots of retaining! The lesson worksheets are quick and easy, and both Zeke and Zoey love completing them each morning. (Review coming soon!)

INDEPENDENT WORK

He loves the Math Mysteries from Schoolhouse Teachers, and he's working on his third one! He also does hand-writing each day and will start transitioning to cursive soon.

Zoey, preschool

LET'S EXPLORE LETTERS

Zoey learned the letter Dd this week. Here are a few of her activities:

LET'S EXPLORE MATH

We are finishing up our review of shapes and colors.

LET'S EXPLORE BOOKS

We read "Make Way for Ducklings," "The Fuzzy Duckling," and "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?" this week. She stamped dinosaur footprints in her journal and make a cute handprint duck.

CO-OP

Each Thursday, we will be attending Co-Op! We had orientation this week. They both enjoyed getting to see their classrooms. Zeke will be taking four classes: Wild Kratts, Torn Paper Art, Story Time Fun, and Legos. Zoey will be taking: Little Problem Solvers Science, Play Time Pals, Little Problem Solvers Math, and Story Time.

They all got a pair of sunglasses and took a picture because they're too cool for school!

It was a great week! I'm really enjoying this school year.

Three Weeks in Review!

We finished up our third week of homeschool this week! It's been a great three weeks, and Zeke and Zoey have really fallen right into a good routine each day. I tweaked our schedule once, but it takes us from 8:00 to 11:00 each day to complete our schoolwork. Here are some of the things we've done!

Zeke, grade 3

AROUND THE WORLD - GEOGRAPHY

Week One - We learned about the deciduous forest biome to introduce the kids to North America. Zeke learned about food chains, the forest strata, the four seasons, and all about soil.

Week Two - We kicked off our geography lessons with the United States! Zeke drew a bald eagle, made a magazine flag mosaic, and blow-painted some fireworks over a New York City silhouette.

Week Three - We went to Mexico this week and got our first passport "stamp." We read all about monarch butterflies and made monarch butterfly mosaic, made some maracas, and made our own pinata! We ate tacos, rice and beans to conclude our trip to Mexico.

SCIENCE

Week One - We learned all about matter this week!

Week Two - We learned about organic and inorganic matter.

Week Three - We learned about Carl Linnaeus, binomial nomenclature, and classification.

MATH

Zeke reviewed many concepts the first two weeks and was introduced to multiplication this week, which he is super excited about!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Zeke is reading "Charlotte's Web" and will finish it up next week. He would have read it in a day, but I'm having him complete a Literature Kit along with it.

He reviewed the four types of sentences and how to fix a run-on sentence.

We've been reviewing consonant digraphs in Language Smarts.

He worked in handwriting each day.

BIBLE

We have completed seven lessons in Bible Study Guide for All Ages, breaking the lessons into two days each. We love this! I read the verses from the Bible and they complete their worksheets. We have memory work and timeline questions. I really like how this is set up! The kids are learning quite a bit. I even made an Instagram reel!

Zoey, Preschool

LET'S EXPLORE LETTERS

She learned the letters A, B, and C this week.

LET'S EXPLORE MATH

Zoey reviewed the colors and shapes with a variety of hands-on activities and worksheets.

All in all, it's been a fantastic three weeks, and I'm excited for the rest of the year!
