In history, we read about George Washington, the Revolutionary War, and his presidency. The kids defined vocabulary words {barge, oath and Constitution}. They also added to their timelines.
They made a beautiful watercolor picture.
We started learning the states and abbreviations by playing a fun game.
Our memory verse was Proverbs 27:19, "As a face is reflected in the water, so the heart reflects the real person." Our character trait was "integrity".
In science, they learned the different ways that animals can protect themselves from predators. They had to draw, color, and cut out an insect and hid it in the house somewhere. Then, they had to find each other's insect!
We also read about the Monarch butterfly's life cycle and made a notebook page about it.
Our poem this week was called, "Washington", and talked about George Washington's early life. The kids illustrated their poems.
In math, Mercie worked on mental addition and subtraction {345 + 70 = ?}. Eli worked on Khan Academy at finding the unit volume.
In grammar, Mercie worked on nouns and verbs. Eli worked on IXL.com on alphabetical order, adjectives, and adverbs.
Mercie worked in her Fun-Schooling Spelling Journal, and Eli read "Toliver's Secret" as part of the extension pack for Bigger.
We also used our Fun-Schooling Journals with Bigger Hearts. We expanded on some science ideas, and I had them start reading "Don't Know Much About the 50 States", one state a day, and write about it, draw the bird, and draw the flower. It's working out well so far!

It looks like a fun week of school for your family! We dabbled in early American history and states study with our kindergarten curriculum last year, and we really enjoyed it. You'll have to explain the game you played so that I can try it when my second child joins our homeschool. :)
ReplyDeleteThe game was simple! We wrote the state name on one side of a half index card and the abbreviation on the other. They took turns drawing a state, finding it on the map and them giving the abbreviation!

DeleteI keep thinking I should look into Heart of Dakota... there is a part of me that really wants a real curriculum, but I haven't found on that seems "just right" yet!
ReplyDeleteWe still haven't, either! HOD is great but there are some things that don't work for us. I am going to start my seven year old with Five in a Row on Monday. It seems I'm always changing things up, lol!
