Homeschool Highlights Link-Up 2021 #1

We had a great week this week! I actually had some sad news last week. I shut down my cottage school. I lost several students over the past few months due to different circumstances - financial reasons and COVID reasons being among them. I didn't have enough students to justify my time, effort, and money that I was pouring into the school. I hated to shut it down, but I felt it was the best decision for my family. I'm also watching Daniel from 8-12 each weekday while Mikaela goes back to in-person school for her senior year. I really felt like I needed to concentrate on my kids and grandson for the rest of the year.

That said, my kids were super happy to be back to "homeschooling at home." We had a fantastic week last week and this week. I'll go over some of our highlights to our homeschool week.

In history, we continued with The Mystery of History Volume One. I really like this curriculum! We learned about Ninevah's Destruction, Habakkuk and Hulda, and the Puppet Kings - Jehoiachin and Zedekiah (from Nebuchadnezzar's takeover of Judah). Each day the boys complete a notebook page about what we've learned. We haven't done the memory cards or timeline yet but I'm considering adding those to our week.

In science, we started using Christian Kids Explore Biology. Last week, we made animal cell models using craft supplies. The boys really enjoyed this activity and did a great job!

We made food chains and a food web this week using our collection of plastic animals. They did a fabulous job!

We also reviewed carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores and producers, consumers, and decomposers.

We kept using Math Lessons for a Living Education and Learning Language Arts Through Literature. I love both of these books.

Mercie had a few science projects in her Apologia General Science curriculum. One of them was blowing up a balloon using vinegar and baking soda! She loved it. 

She is using From Adam to Us by Notgrass and loves it. She just started on Book Two! She uses the map book, timeline book, and student workbook with it.

She is using Principles of Mathematics for math and Learning Language Arts Through Literature.

Zeke completed J is for Jungle this week in Tot School, which I'll post about later. I'm also beginning a link up on Thursdays called Tot School Thursdays for any toddler school posts!

Mercie had an orthodontist appointment Wednesday and got two more brackets put on her new molars as well as moving the hooks for her rubber bands. She changed her band colors to dark blue, purple, and aqua.

We also got two new puppies this week, so now we have more dogs than kids. Oops! But the boys love Shep and Shiloh.

We also got snow this week! Monday and Tuesday our public schools were closed (no joke) due to the snow. It's crazy how a little snow or ice can shut down Louisiana! The kids loved it and made snowmen and snow angels and snow balls. Even Zeke went out for a while and played!

I took Eli today to get his driver's permit. Can't believe he will get his license this summer!
